Chris de Burgh, The Traveller

I first came across Chris De Burgh when leafing through a bunch of old cassettes lying around the house. It was a compilation album with a chessboard on the front I think. There are some corkers on it but this one sticks in the mind because some years later I was driven down from Portsmouth to London by someone in our Judo club whose name I forget but who was a bit of a nutter . . . one of his many quirks was playing this song over and over on the journey and screaming the chorus loud at the top of his voice directed at all and sundry on the road especially those who had the audacity to overtake us. I find there’s an almost overwhelming Christian vibe in nearly every one of Mr de Burgh’s fine songs.
