Gerard McMann, Cry Little Sister

I remember the bus shelter posters across Southsea for The Lost Boys in 1987. They had the menacing picture of Kiefer Sutherland staring down on you — quite intimidating for a small seaside town in the late eighties. This film was a trailblazer in so many ways — Vampire cool way before Buffy, before Twilight, before Tarantino… before any of the modern takes on Vampires that are so ubiquitous now. Great script and great acting especially from the scene-stealing and sadly now departed Corey Haim. But this film had a great soundtrack too. When I finally got round to seeing it I was hooked by the opening track (the spooky Doors cover), the sax solos from the muscle guy but this track in particular with its haunting refrain seems to sum up the vibe the director was going for: kids lost to the feral influence of something supernatural…perhaps better summed up by the tag line from the posters “Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It’s fun to be a vampire.”

I must have been sleeping all day and partying all night because I don’t remember seeing these posters. I do remember dancing on the pier to Joe Le Taxi by Vanessa Paradis …. maybe you would have enjoyed hearing the 2 saxophones because I don’t think you would have been dancing!?

Just remembered another catchy classic French song from 1987: France Gall – Ella, elle l’a – remember it?
